Dance is becoming a very important part of the marching arts activity within wind players.  Wind players need to develop visual skill sets of basic marching as well as all kinds of dance.  “Playing in Plie” is a great example of how to apply and develop basic tone quality exercises to one of the most basic dance movements.  Matt Harloff, assisted by Susie Harloff, shares clear explanations and includes a video of band students demonstrating these exercises.

One of the most popular exercises used by color guards or dance ensembles is the Across the Floors exercise.  There might be hundreds of reasons why this exercise is so beneficial, however the most important could be the fact that students can watch and learn by observing each other AND because this exercise breaks the group into smaller groups, the instructor is set up to provide better individual feedback.  Across the Floors is a great example of how to apply and develop basic tone quality exercises to basic marching directions using the Across the Floors exercise.
